The Alcatel OneTouch Idol

A1

The simple yet elegant design, decent specifications, and a good camera and audio system make the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 one of the best budget smartphones available. Check out our review to find out why.

There are currently two variations of the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3available.  The difference is in the size of their display, one has a 4.7-inch display and the other with a 5.5-inch display.  For our review we’re going to focus on the 5.5-inch version.

Pro

  • Design: Attractive, slim, and symmetrical body. Has a pebble design and subtle silver trim. The back has a hard plastic cover with a brushed metal finish. Phone is light-weight.

A2

  • No such thing as upside-down. Phone can be used in either orientation. The screen flips over for easy usage. Calls can also be answered either way as a microphone and speaker combo is found on both ends
  • Display: 5.5-inch IPS LCD display with 1080p resolution.
  • Brightness and viewing angles are good.
  • Audio: Dual front-facing speakers sound great.
  • Size of the display plus the good sound make watching videos and playing games an enjoyable experience

A3

  • Processor: Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor backed by Adreno 405 GPU and 2 GB of Ram.
  • Reliable performance even if not very fast or smooth
  • Connectivity: Full suite of connectivity options available, including dual SIM support.
  • Voice call quality is good with the sound being loud and clear.
  • Storage: 16/32 GB depending on whether you pick the single SIM or dual SIM version of the phone. Both versions allow for Micro SD card support which can expand the storage capacity up to 128 GB.
  • Battery Life: 2,910 mAh unit allows for a full day of use with around 3 hours of screen-on time.
  • Power saving mode activates when battery life is down to 15%
  • Camera: 13 MP camera on back with 8 MP camera on front. Solid enough camera for the price.
  • Software: Android 5.0 Lollipop is reliable

A4

Con

  • Large size may not be for everyone
  • Software needs a bit more polish
  • Double tap to wake feature not so reliable
  • Picture quality is a bit grainy and color is lacking in brightness.

This phone is a reliable performer at the low cost of $250
