LG is set to unveil its latest flagship, the LG G6, at the MWC event on February 26th. With Samsung’s absence from the event, LG has a prime opportunity to stand out. In a departure from the less popular modular design of the LG G5, LG has opted for a sleek metal and glass unibody design with a non-removable battery for the G6. To outshine competitors, LG focused on incorporating top-notch features and specifications into their flagship. The choice of the Snapdragon 821 processor for the LG G6 has been confirmed by a slide from LG’s CES events presentation.
Snapdragon 821: LG G6 Uses to Avoid Delay – Overview
Initially, there were speculations that LG would opt for the Snapdragon 835 SoC, manufactured using the 10nm process, known for its improved speed and energy efficiency compared to its predecessors. Utilizing the latest processor would have seemed like a logical decision for LG, however, delays in obtaining the Snapdragon 835 chipsets hindered the mass production of the LG G6. Recent reports indicated that Samsung secured early access to the supplies of Snapdragon 835, leading to challenges for other manufacturers aiming to launch devices in the first quarter of the year.
Facing similar challenges, LG decided not to wait for Snapdragon 835 chipsets and opted to proceed with the Snapdragon 821 chipset for the LG G6. Delaying production to secure a sufficient quantity of chips would have pushed the device’s launch to April or May.
LG made a strategic decision by choosing the Snapdragon 821 processor for the LG G6. Setting the launch date for March 10th gives them an advantageous head start over their main competitor, Samsung, whose flagship is scheduled for mid-April. This 6-week lead time allows LG to avoid direct competition. Furthermore, LG can leverage consumer trust by offering a safer alternative. With a strong track record in phone battery safety, LG stands out in contrast to Samsung’s recent battery issues with the Note 7. Consumers may be hesitant to trust Samsung again, while LG has assured that the G6 battery is reliable. Additionally, LG’s aggressive marketing approach for their “Idea Smartphone” positions the device to generate significant buzz and be a standout release of the year.
