Xiaomi made a splash in the Android smartphone arena with the boundary-pushing release of the bezel-less Mi Mix in November 2016. This standout device showcased top-tier specifications housed within a stunning design. Featuring a 6.4-inch display boasting a resolution of 1080×2040 pixels, the Mi Mix initially ran on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, with plans for an Android Nougat update. Powering the device was a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 CPU paired with an Adreno 530 GPU. The Mi Mix was available with either 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage or 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Sporting a 16MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera, the Xiaomi Mi Mix exuded elegance in its original state. However, you can elevate your smartphone experience further by incorporating a custom recovery and root access, which is precisely what we will delve into.

Xiaomi Smartphone: Installing TWRP & Rooting – Guide

  1. Download the file named twrp-3.0.2-0-lithium.img and change its name to “recovery.img” for ease of use in the process.
  2. Transfer the recovery.img file to the Minimal ADB & Fastboot folder located in the program files on your Windows installation drive.
  3. Proceed to boot your Xiaomi Mi Mix into fastboot mode following the instructions outlined in step 4 above.
  4. Now, connect your Xiaomi Mi Mix to your PC.
  5. Launch the Minimal ADB & Fastboot.exe program as detailed in step 3 above.
  6. In the command window, input the following commands:
    • fastboot reboot-bootloader
    • fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
    • fastboot reboot recovery or use the Volume Up + Down + Power combination to get into TWRP now.
    • (this will boot your device in TWRP recovery mode)
  1. Now, when prompted by TWRP, you’ll be asked if you want to authorize system modifications. Usually, you’ll want to grant permission for modifications. To initiate the dm-verity verification, swipe to the right. Following this, proceed to flash SuperSU and the dm-verity-opt-encrypt on your phone.
  2. Proceed to flash SuperSU by selecting the Install option. If your phone’s storage is not functioning, perform a data wipe to enable storage. After completing the data wipe, return to the main menu, select the “Mount” option, and then tap on Mount USB Storage.
  3. Once USB storage is mounted, connect your phone to your PC and transfer the SuperSU.zip file onto your device.
  4. Throughout this process, do not reboot your phone. Remain in the TWRP recovery mode.
  5. Return to the main menu, then select “Install” and navigate to the recently copied SuperSU.zip file to flash it. Likewise, flash the no-dm-verity-opt-encrypt file in a similar manner.
  6. Upon flashing SuperSU, proceed to reboot your phone. Your process is now complete.
  7. Your device will now boot up. Locate SuperSU in the app drawer. Install the Root Checker app to confirm root access.

To manually boot into TWRP recovery mode, disconnect the USB cable from your Xiaomi Mi Mix and power off your device by holding down the power key for a moment. Next, press and hold both the Volume Down and Power keys to turn on your Xiaomi Mi Mix. Release the power key when the phone’s screen lights up, but continue holding the Volume Down key. Your device will then boot into TWRP recovery mode.

Remember to create a Nandroid Backup for your Xiaomi Mi Mix at this point. Additionally, explore the usage of Titanium Backup now that your phone is rooted. That concludes the process.
