Phone Fingerprint Scanner Absence on Samsung Galaxy S8: Reasons

Rumors surrounding the Galaxy S8 initially suggested the inclusion of an ‘in-display’ fingerprint scanner, fueling speculation about Samsung’s partnership with touch sensor provider Synaptics to introduce this innovative feature. However, it was later confirmed in January that the Galaxy S8 would not feature an embedded ‘in-display’ fingerprint scanner and instead, the scanner would be located on the rear of the device, as revealed in various leaks alongside the camera setup.

Phone Fingerprint Scanner Absence on Samsung Galaxy S8: Reasons – Overview

Despite efforts by Synaptics, the necessary technology for an ‘in-display’ fingerprint scanner was not ready in time for the Galaxy S8 release. Consequently, Samsung decided to position the phone fingerprint scanner on the rear of the device.

Samsung heavily invested in Synaptics’ emerging technology last year; however, the outcome proved to be disappointing. As the production deadline approached, the company faced a crucial decision and ultimately opted to hastily relocate the fingerprint scanner from the front home button to the back of the device.

This setback poses a challenge for Samsung, as they had intended to utilize the technology to drive sales. In response to the unexpected change, Samsung may opt to focus on implementing the iris scanner and potentially explore the speculated facial recognition technology. However, a significant concern arises as Samsung’s rival, Apple, is reportedly working on incorporating on-screen fingerprint scanning technology in their upcoming iPhone 8. If Apple introduces this technology first, it may diminish the novelty and uniqueness of a similar feature in Samsung devices. Rumors suggest that Apple has made significant progress in testing this innovative technology.

As the year progresses, Samsung is gearing up to unveil the Galaxy Note 8. There is a strong possibility that the upcoming phablet may encompass all the features that were absent in the Galaxy S8, assuming it manages to avoid any potential setbacks.
