Install Android 4.4.4 KitKat 10.5.1.A.0.283 FTF

Sony’s Xperia ZL has finally received an update to Android 4.4.4 Kitkat.  The new update is build number 10.5.1.A.0.283.

Owners of the Xperia XL now just have to wait for this update to reach their region and they can get Android 4.4.4 Kitkat on their devices.  If, however, you can’t wait, you can update manually by using an FTF file flashed via Sony Flashtool.

In this guide, we show you how you can update your Xperia ZL C6502, C6503 to Android 4.4.4 KitKat with build number 10.5.A.0.283.

Prepare your phone:

  1. Check that your phone can use this firmware.
    • This guide and the firmware is only for use with the Xperia ZL C6502, C6503
    • Check the model number through Settings -> About device.
    • Using this firmware with other devices can result in bricking
  2. Make battery has at least over 60 percent of its charge
    • If phone runs out of battery before the flashing process ends, the device could be bricked.
  3. Back everything up.
    • Back up you sms messages, call logs, contacts
    • Back up you media files by copying them to a PC or Laptop
    • If your device is rooted, back up your apps, system data and other important content with Titanium Backup
    • If your device has CWM or TWRP previously installed, backup Nandroid.
  4. Make sure that USB Debugging Mode is enabled
    • Go to Settings -> Developer Options ->USB debugging.
    • If there are no Developer Options in Settings, try Settings -> about device and then tap “build number” seven times
  5. Have Sony Flashtool installed and set up
    • Open Sony Flashtool, go to Flashtool folder.
    • Open Flashtool->Drivers->Flashtool-drivers.exe
    • Install Flashtool, Fastboot and Xperia ZR driver.
  6. Have an OEM data cable to connect phone and PC.

Note: The methods needed to flash custom recoveries, roms and to root your phone can result in bricking your device. Rooting your device will also void the warranty and it will no longer be eligible for free device services from manufacturers or warranty providers. Install Android 4.4.4 KitKat 10.5.1.A.0.283 FTF

  1. Download the latest firmware Android 4.4.4 KitKat 10.5.A.0.283 FTF file.Here for Xperia ZL C6502  and here for  Xperia ZL C6503
    • Make sure that the file you download matches your phone model.
  2. Copy file. Paste in Flashtool>Firmwares folder.
  3. Open Flashtool.exe.
  4. There will be a small lightening button on the top left corner, hit it. Select Flashmode.
  5. Select FTF firmware file placed in the Firmware folder.
  6. On the right side, select what want to wipe. It’s recommended that you wipe data, cache and apps log.
  7. Click OK, firmware will prep for flashing. This could take a while to load.
  8. When the firmware is loaded, you will be prompted to attach phone. Do so by turning it off and keeping back key pressed down.
  9. With the Xperia ZL, the Volume Down key does the job of the back key. Keep the back key presed down and plug in the data cable.
  10. When the phone is detected in Flashmode, firmware will begin flashing, Heep pressing the Volume Down key until process is complete.
  11. When you see “Flashing ended or Finished Flashing” let go of the Volume Down key, plug cable out and reboot device.

After you’ve done all these steps, you should find that you have installed Android 4.4.4 Kitkat on your Xperia ZL.
