How To: Install Android 5.0.1 Lollipop On And Root A Canadian Galaxy S4 I33M

The Canadian Galaxy S4 I33M

Samsung is releasing an update to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop for the Galaxy S4.  The roll out of updates for the Galaxy S4 began with the Exynos variant and now it has come to the Canadian variant or the SGH-I337M.

In this update, Samsung revamped their UI according to the Material Design of Google.  It also adds notification cards to the lock-screen and some enhancements to performance and battery life.

The update for the S4 SGH-I337M will be hitting different regions at different times.  If the update has not yet reached your  region, you can either wait or use the alternative method we include here to install Android 5.0.1 Lollipop on the Canadian Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M.  We also include a method to root your device once it is running Android 5.0.1 Lollipop.

Prepare your phone:

  1. Make sure your phone is a Galaxy S4 I557M. it should be one of the variants listed below.  Check your device model by going to Settings>System>About device.

o          Fido Mobile Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M

o          Telus Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M

o          Bell Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M

o          Rogers Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M

o          Virgin Mobile Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M

o          Sasktel Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M

o          Koodo Mobile Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M

  1. Your device battery should have 50 percent of its power to ensure that it does not run out of power before installation is complete.
  2. Enable USB debugging . first, enable developer options by going to Settings>System>About Device>Build Number. Tap build number 7 times to enable developer options.  Then go to Settings>Systems>Developer Options>Enable USB debugging.
  3. You will need to wipe your phone to achieve a clean installation. Before you do so, make sure you have backed up all important data such as contacts, text messages, call logs and important media content.
  4. Back up your EFS partition.
  5. If you have custom recovery, create a Nandroid backup.
  6. Perform a factory reset. Boot your phone into recovery mode by first turning it off completely, then turning it back on by pressing and holding down the volume up, home and power key. From recovery mode, wipe factory data.
  7. Close Samsung Kies and any Firewall and Antivirus programs first. They will interfere with Odin 3.
  8. Have a original data cable that you can use to establish the connection between the device and the PC.

Download:

  1. Samsung USB drivers if you use a PC if you use a MAC you don’t need to.
  2. Odin3 for PC.  For Mac, you can use JOdin.
  3. The appropriate firmware for your device.

Update Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M To Android 5.0.1 Lollipop Official Firmware

  1. Open Odin3. Or JOdin if you are a MAC user
  2. Connect phone to PC in download mode. Turn phone off and turn it back on by pressing and holding the volume down, home and power key.  Keep holding these keys down until a warning turns up then press volume up.  This will put your device in download mode.  Plug the data cable in now.
  3. When Odin3 detects the phone, you should see the ID:COM bar located on the top-right corner turn either blue or yellow.
  4. Load the firmware file. This should be in .tar format.  Click either the AP/PDA tab in Odin.  Select the file and wait for Odin to load it.
  5. If the auto-reboot option in Odin unticked, make sure to tick it. Otherwise all other options should remain as is.
  6. Make sure that your Odin’s options match those in the photo below.

  1. Click the start button to begin flashing the firmware.
  2. When the firmware is flashed, you will see a Finished status in the installation box and the ID:COM bar should turn green. Disconnect your device now.
  3. Your device should automatically reboot but if it doesn’t you can reboot it manually by disconnecting it from the PC and keeping the power key pressed for a while. Your device should turn off.  Turn it back on by pressing the power key.
  4. The first boot could take up to 10 minutes. Just wait.

 

Root Your Canadian Galaxy S4 Running Lollipop

  1. Download & extract CF-Auto-Root-jfltecan-jfltevl-sghi337m.zip
  2. Put your phone in download mode.
  3. Open Odin3 v3.10.6.exe file on PC.
  4. Click “AP” tab in Odin and select CF-Autoroot.tar file that you got after extracting the file above.
  5. Let Odin load the file and connect phone to your PC.
  6. If the Auto-reboot option is unticked, tick it but otherwise leave everything as is.

  1. When your phone is detected in download mode, you should see the ID:COM box turn blue.
  2. Click the start button and Odin will begin flashing Auto-Root file.
  3. When flashing ends, phone will reboot.
  4. When it is rebooted, check the SuperSu app is in the app drawer.
  5. You can also install BusyBoxor verify root access using Root Checker.
