Build

  • The design of the handset is quite pleasing to the eyes; it is in no way less than the latest handsets.
  • The physical material of the handset is all metal.
  • The device feels robust in hand; it is very comfortable to hold.
  • It has a good grip.
  • Weighing 143g it is not very heavy.
  • Measuring 7.3mm it competes with sleekest phones.
  • The screen to body ratio of the device is 66.8%.
  • There is a single speaker on the back side.
  • The power and volume button are easy to differentiate from each other as the volume button is smooth while the power button is a bit rigid. They are present on the right edge.
  • There is a physical Home button beneath the screen; fingerprint scanner has also been incorporated in the Home button.
  • USB port is on the bottom edge.
  • HTC logo is embossed on the back of the handset.

The good points:

  • One A9 has a 5.0 inch AMOLED display.
  • The display resolution of the device is 1080 x 1920 pixels.
  • The pixel density of the screen is 441ppi.
  • The display is very sharp.
  • There are two colour modes to choose from.
  • One of the modes gives very natural and close to real life colours.
  • The colour temperature of the screen is 6800 Kelvin which is actually very close to the reference temperatures of 6500 Kelvin.
  • The text is very clear so eBook reading is not a problem.

HTC One A9

The points that need improvement:

  • The maximum brightness of the screen is 356nits, due to which it is very difficult to see in the sun.
  • The minimum brightness of the screen is 11nits, it is harsh on the eyes in the night.
  • The other mode gives saturated colours which is not very bad if you are used to it.

Performance

The good points:

  • The handset has Qualcomm MSM8952 Snapdragon 617 Chipset system.
  • The installed processor is Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 & quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A53.
  • The device has two version of RAM 2 GB and 3 GB.
  • The processing is very fast, no lag was noticed.
  • The device performs the basic tasks every easily.

The points that need improvement:

  • The handset has Adreno 405 GPU, the graphic unit is a little disappointing.
  • The performance in the gaming department is not very good but if you don’t play games on your handset it won’t be a problem.

 

Camera

The good points:

  • One A9 has a 13 megapixels camera at the back
  • On the front there is a 4.1 megapixel Ultrapixel one.
  • The back camera has f/2.0 aperture.
  • The feature of dual Led flash is also present here.
  • Optical image stabilization works very nicely.
  • The camera app is filled with different modes.
  • HTC’s Zoe app is also present, various editing can be done.
  • The camera also captures RAW images; people with more knowledge about photography would know how to use this feature to their advantage.
  • Video editing is also possible.
  • HD videos can be recorded.
  • The colours of the images are very natural.
  • The images are very detailed, everything is pretty distinct.
  • The images produced in lowlight condition are also good.

The points that need improvement:

  • You cannot record 4K videos.
  • The images taken in low light conditions are a bit on the warm side.
  • The videos recorded in lowlight condition are not good.
  • There is a lot of noise in lowlight situations and sometimes the videos end up being blurry.

Memory & Battery

The good points:

  • The device comes in two versions of built in storage; 32GB version and 16 GB version.
  • One of the best points is that One A9 comes with a microSD card slot; this feature is not easy to find in the latest devices.
  • The complete charging time of the device is 110 minutes, not so great but it is good.

The points that need improvement:

  • The built in storage is a little less but you can get the 32 GB version.
  • The device has a 2150mAh battery, which feels a dwarf right from the beginning.
  • The total screen on time is 6 hours and 3 minutes, completely poor.
  • Heavy users cannot expect more than 8 hours a day from this battery.
  • Medium users might make it through the day.

Features

The good points:

  • The device runs the latest version of Android, v6.0 (Marshmallow) operating system is pretty good.
  • Sense 7.0 user interface has been used.
  • All the apps associated with Sense are present.
  • Zoe App, Blinkfeed, Sense Home and motion gestures are present.
  • Browsing experience with Google Chrome is great, loading, scrolling and zooming is very smooth.
  • Various communication features like dual band Wi-Fi, Near Field Communication, Bluetooth 4.1, aGPS and Glonass are present.
  • Various editing tools are present.
  • Sense Music play has been replaced by the Google music app.
  • The present speaker is loud, producing sound of 72.3 dB.
  • The call quality is also good.

Verdict

On the whole HTC One A9 is a consistent handset, it is dependable. Other than battery life there is not much fault in anything else. The design is impressive, performance is fast, camera is good but video recording is not good enough and there are many useful apps. MicroSD card slot and marshmallow operating system are also attractive. HTC is really trying its best to produce quality handsets but it needs to work a little more harder.
